Hab It

Habilitation involves 1-to-1 interaction in the child’s home or the community, with clear goals designed to maximize functional skills and positive behavior. There are a variety of teaching approaches that can be used as part of habilitation, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Natural Environment Teaching (NET), Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT), visual communication systems and more.  We will show you how to combine this and more for Hab It.

Hab It teaches the child how to do the simple things we take for granted. Things like brushing your teeth, dressing, potty training, social skills (like getting along with siblings), safety around the house and outside and enjoying your child's development.

Keeping your Child focused

  • Have a Picture schedule of the activities you’re going to do during the day to help your child stay on task.  Picture schedules help children in the spectrum stay focused on the activities they are going to do, because they have pictures to associate with the activity that they’re doing next.
  • Give  them a choice of  where they are going to work, for example (do you want to work on the kitchen table or the little table in the Hab room, this way your child will feel in control, and more likely  to work with you .
  • Have physical activities like a letter bounce game, use a mini trampoline and alphabet letters spread on the floor, have your child bounce 5 times and jump off to get an A, B etc.  Another activity is to have your child sit on a medium exercise ball while they work on different learning activities. This way they work on balance and the learning activity at the same time.
  • Have a reward system set up for your child to keep them motivated.  You can use organic lolly pops, little snacks, stickers, bubbles, and cause and effect toys, whatever your child enjoys and keeps them motivated.
  • Work in a quiet area away from distractions or set up your own Hab It room.
  • Set up a timer to time each activity to keep your child on task.
